Chapter Eleven

Now

The days following the gravity wave were some of the slowest since Pet joined the Vanguard. Usually, his trio exceled at finding things to do on long trips. Namely him. They had passed many days in the depths of space taking Pet against every surface in the ship.

Unfortunately, after Nauzeia threw a fit over a few bruises, they decided it was best to avoid sex until they left the Penumbra Belt. Once in the Stardust, the agents could complain all they wanted. Without a communication channel they would be screaming into the void.

After going his whole remembered life barely knowing about sex, one would think two days of abstinence should be easy. This assumption would be wrong. A year spent having sex on an almost daily basis meant the loss of intimate contact left an expansive hole in his life.

Their third day traveling the Penumbra Belt found him running on a treadmill, working off excess energy. Upbeat music with a heavy bass played in his ears through a pair of headphones as his legs pounded against the treadmill’s belt. It drowned out all other sound, but what he really needed was a way to block his eyes.

On a bench in front of him, Brog lay on his back and pumped weights with both sets of arms. The sight of so much straining muscle made Pet wish it were possible to run blindfolded.

He called it quits at the five-mile mark. Not his best pace, but he had nearly fallen off the machine three times. He couldn’t work out with distractions, and Brog’s physical abilities were a definite distraction.

Removing his headphones, Pet set the treadmill to a brisk walking pace as a cooldown.

Off to the side, Brog slammed the weights to the floor with an angry clang.

Pet slowed his pace more. “Problem?”

“It’s too easy. I need heavier.”

This didn’t seem like a problem, and Pet waited for the other metaphorical shoe to drop.

Brog gestured at the weights in frustration. “These are the heaviest set of gravity weights they make.”

Gravity weights worked by increasing their gravitational attraction. It was a good solution for ships with limited storage but restricted the weight to how much strain the mechanics could bear.

The treadmill came to a stop. “I have an idea.” Pet’s hungry smile got Brog’s attention. He instructed Brog to lie back on the bench and pick the weights up again. The Ocan did, and once he held the bars over his chest, Pet perched on the weights as well.

He gazed down at Brog between his knees. “Now try.”

“How am I supposed to concentrate with this kind ‘a view.” Brog dropped both bars until they almost touched his chest, bringing Pet’s legs to either side of his head, then pushed back up.

It became a game. Pet stubbornly held to the bars, as Brog moved them in more erratic ways trying to make him fall.

By the end of the fourth set both panted heavily. Pet climbed off the bars to straddle Brog’s stomach.

With one pair of
